Floods Devastate Northern Italy. You Can Help

Rainstorms battered Cinque Terre, Tuscany and other parts of northern Italy this week, causing flash floods and seven deaths (six other people remain missing). Some villages, including the Cinque Terre’s picturesque Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare, have been all but swept away.

Update, Nov. 4: More flooding has hit Genoa and Liguria. So far, another four have been killed, with four more people missing. Hopefully, northern Italy’s luck will change soon… but it hasn’t yet. Here’s a video of the terrible flooding in Genoa’s center.

Below is a video of some of the devastation in the Cinque Terre; it’s pretty heart-wrenching, so prepare yourself. This photo gallery of the flooding and its aftermath is also pretty terrible. Homes collapsed, bridges vanished, and the town of Vernazza had to be evacuated by sea.

It’s estimated that the damage caused is in the hundreds of millions of euros. Italy’s just commited 65 million euros, but these regions will need much more.

And you can help.

Here at Walks of Italy, we’ve donated to the relief and repair efforts to try to get the people of these beautiful regions back on their feet (and in their homes). Here’s how you can do the same. And remember, even $5 or $10 helps. (Please note: We’ve updated the following section, and will continue to do so as we find out about more ways you can help this devastated area!).

Wiring money to the relief effort

Here are the details you’ll need:

  • Bank name: Banca Intesa Sanpaolo
  • Bank address: Viale Lina Cavalieri 236, Rome
  • Account details you’ll need to arrange a transfer: IBAN – IT 80 O 03069 05061 100000000567; BIC – BCITITMMXXX
  • Memo that must be included with the transfer: “Un aiuto subito. Alluvione Levante ligure e Lunigiana”

Donating by credit card or PayPal

Don’t want to wire? If you’ve got a credit card or a PayPal account, you can still help. Just go to the Red Cross Italy donation site and, under “Donation Cause,” pick “Emergency Tuscany and Liguria” from the drop-down list. It couldn’t be easier.

Texting from an Italian cell phone

In Italy and on a cell phone with an Italian phone operator (TIM, Vodafone, Wind, 3, or Tiscali Postemobile)? Send a text message to 45500 to donate €2. The line remains active until Nov. 28.
